So after a 5 month lay-off the Malaysia Kart Cadet championship resumed at Sepang, Malaysia, on the 3rd of October 2021. It was decided to try an OTK chassis for this weekend courtesy of Seven Racing. In addition it was decided to change from No 31 to No 13 as this was my dad's and grandad's race number when they used to race karts.
In Qualifying i set a new track personal best with a 55.493s, this was without the benefit of a tow but only 2/10th of P1.
In Heat 1 i lost touch with the lead two whilst having some close racing with No 91, I finished in third position, 3.2s from P1.
In heat 2 i found a little more pace and was able to follow the lead two throughout the race. I finished in 3rd but only 1/10th and 2/10th from P2 and P1 respectively.
In the pre-final i found more pace and was able to battle for 2nd throughout. I got bumped on the last lap however i still managed to finish in 3rd but only 2/10th and 2sec from P2 and P1 respectively.
In the previous heats and pre-final starts the lead karts used team tactics, boxing me in, to prevent any first corner gains. a new strategy was adopted in the Final that resulted in gaining one place to P2 by turn 2. For the duration of the of the race i was battling for P1 with the position changing with No 7 a couple of times, we'd also managed to pull a small gap from the chasing pack. with three laps to go i took the lead at turn 1 . however, at turn 3 No 7 shunted me going into the corner causing me to lose the position and gap to the chasing pack. For the remaining laps it was a three way battle with No 45 and 91 for P2 where i dropped to P4 before regaining P3 with two laps to go then P2 on the turn 1 of the last lap. I left the door open at turn 7 allowing No 45 through however i benefited from a better line through turn 7 and managed to carry more speed around the inside of the final turn to take P2 by 2/10th.
This weekend was my best result in the Malaysia championship to date and i showed great pace recording the fastest laps in Heat 2, Pre-final and the Final. Can't wait for round 4 in two weeks.
